Protoworks is the trading name of John Taylor, an independent software developer operating as a UK sole trader. I develop custom software, electronic circuits, custom PCBs, embedded firmware, connected devices and software proofs of concept for businesses and individuals. While operating independently, trusted practitioners are brought in for collaboration when a project benefits from additional expertise.
Getting started is simple and stress-free, with a straightforward two-step onboarding process:
Step 1: The Free Scoping Call (30 minutes) - You can start with a brief, no-obligation discussion. This is an opportunity to share ideas, define goals, and determine the most suitable path forward.
Step 2: Agree the Next Step - I help you decide whether you need Technical Advice to explore your options or Flexible Engineering for hands-on work, and agree the work and charges before starting.
Yes. Protoworks' terms and conditions are published in the legal section of this website, including the Terms & Conditions for Hourly Services (v1.7, PDF) and the Terms & Conditions for Fixed Price Development (v1.7, PDF).
I develop software, electronic circuits, custom PCBs, embedded firmware, connected devices and software proofs of concept. I also investigate, improve and deploy existing and live systems. Before booking, I agree what is included, the working environment and what you will receive.
For now, I provide software, circuit and PCB design files, embedded firmware and documentation. I do not currently supply physical boards, kits or assembled devices.
Yes. I work on existing and live systems as part of my software and engineering services, including troubleshooting, changes and deployment. I agree the systems, authorised work and appropriate precautions with you in the usual Work Brief or Statement of Work. Ongoing support can be included with agreed tasks, availability and response arrangements.
The most suitable tools are always chosen for the job. John Taylor, the lead developer, brings over 20 years of experience writing and deploying code across diverse platforms. While regular tools include C#, C++, Python, Go, TypeScript, n8n, and Node-RED, there is always enthusiasm for picking up new technologies or working within existing client codebases.
Keeping in touch is straightforward. Regular updates are provided via email or messaging apps (like Signal or WhatsApp). To respect busy schedules, phone calls are reserved for urgent items.
If any questions or blocks pop up, development is temporarily paused and resumes promptly after a quick discussion.
Yes, for the bespoke code and design files supplied for your project, subject to the agreed terms. For hourly work, once the relevant fees and approved costs are paid, I provide a signed transfer of the rights I own when I hand over completed work, at no extra charge. If work ends with paid-for partial work, I provide the transfer promptly. You have a licence to use the paid-for bespoke work while that transfer is completed. Fixed-price work uses the transfer arrangements in the Statement of Work signed by both you and me.
I keep ownership of my pre-existing tools and libraries and any reusable materials specifically identified for retention before the work starts. You receive the agreed licences needed to use and maintain the deliverables, including making changes or having another developer work on them. Third-party and open-source components keep their own licence terms. Read the applicable terms for the full ownership and licensing arrangements.
Protecting your intellectual property is a priority. Non-disclosure agreements are signed, provided they align with standard terms and a mutual fit is confirmed. Before sharing sensitive project information, please review the NDA & Confidentiality Guidelines.
Please ask for current insurance details relevant to your proposed work before booking. Cover depends on the policy terms and exclusions; a contractual liability limit does not establish cover or guarantee an insurer will pay.
I contract as John Taylor trading as Protoworks, a sole trader. For a direct engagement, employment status must reflect the contract and the actual working arrangements; a business-to-business label does not settle tax or employment status. If an intermediary is involved, the applicable IR35 or off-payroll working rules need a separate assessment.
